Shannon started pitching organizaed horseshoes when he joined the NHPA in 1988 at the age of 12 years old. The "old timers" of the association convinced him to start his early career pitching from the full 40' distance. This must have worked out for him because now Shannon is one of the top 5 pitchers in the world.
Inducted into the Tennessee Hall of Fame in 2006, he has won the Tennessee state men's championship 12 times aurpassing Roger Norwood's previous record. His goal of winning a World Tournament still illudes him. Shannon has also been active in the THPA, was a past president and currently serves as 2nd Vice President.
Shannon has envisioned the need for a "professional" horseshoe pitching organization for many years. In 2008 he teamed up with several other horseshoe pitching supporters to form the Horseshoe Pitching Professional Tour and currently serves as President of this organization.
